The "Bucket Test" is a simple, reliable 24-hour method used to determine if your pool is actually losing water through a leak or if the sun and wind are simply lowering the levels.
It is common for pool owners to notice water loss and immediately fear the worst. However, environmental factors like wind and sun can cause significant evaporation. The Bucket Test is the industry-standard way to determine if you have a physical leak or if the Hamilton sun is simply doing its work.

🔵A 5-Gallon Bucket: Use a clean, leak-free plastic bucket (a standard hardware store bucket works perfectly).
🔵Waterproof Marker: A high-quality permanent marker (like a Sharpie Pro) is essential for marking wet surfaces.
Follow these simple steps to diagnose your pool’s water loss:
Level the Pool: Ensure your pool water is at its standard operating height.
Prepare the Bucket: Fill a clean 5-gallon bucket with pool water, leaving about 1–2 inches of space at the top.
Position for Accuracy: Set the bucket on the first or second step of your pool. This ensures the water in the bucket stays the same temperature as the pool, keeping the test accurate.
Mark the Inside: Once the water settles, use a waterproof marker to draw a horizontal line at the water level inside the bucket.
Mark the Outside: Turn off your pool pump temporarily to let the pool surface calm. Draw a second horizontal line on the exterior of the bucket to mark the pool’s water level.
24-Hour Observation: Turn your pump back on but ensure any automatic filling systems are deactivated. Wait exactly one full day before checking the results.

After 24 hours, compare the water loss at both marks:
Standard Evaporation: If both the inside and outside levels have dropped by the same amount,
your pool is likely fine.
Potential Leak: If the water level on the outside of the bucket has dropped lower than the water inside the bucket, you likely have a leak.
If your bucket test shows that your pool is losing water faster than the rate of evaporation, every minute counts. Unattended leaks can lead to skyrocketing water bills and devastating structural damage to your pool shell, deck, and even your home’s foundation.
